One unlikely but powerful tool when it comes to learning to read is the smartphone! There are plenty of entertaining and engaging apps you can download to get your little ones reading. Here are some of our favourites:
Teach Your Monster to Read
Teach Your Monster to Read earned a BAFTA nomination for the fun and creative ways it gets children reading. Kids design their own monster then take it on an adventure to meet characters, play games and win prizes. They’ll match letters and sounds, segment tricky words and eventually read short sentences.
Learn to Read – Duolingo ABC
Everyone’s favourite green owl is here to help teach children to read and write in English. Designed to be as fun as possible, Learn to Read teaches through games and stories with funny characters. Kids will pick up the alphabet and phonics, build their vocabulary and get to practise their handwriting all while sparking a love of reading.
Endless Alphabet teaches ABC’s with a cast of cute monsters. Words are brought to life through fun animations and interactive spelling puzzles, expanding your kids’ vocabulary as they work their way through the alphabet.
Starfall: Learn to Read
Zac the Rat and friends teach vowel sounds and their spellings through activities, movies and songs. Children have fun while they pick up the basics and once they’ve mastered them, they can move on to Starfall’s other literacy apps.
Bring stories to life with the CBeebies Storytime app. Its library of interactive storybooks, featuring popular characters and well-loved authors, can be downloaded and read anytime, anywhere. Children have the option to read by themselves, with a grown-up or have the stories read to them depending on their reading ability.
As long as you have a phone and sufficient data, your kids can keep learning to read no matter where they are. Make sure you’re covered with a phone and data plan that’s right for you. Take a look at our plans here.
