Three Apps to Help with Your Christmas Dinner

When you think of Christmas, what do you picture? Brightly wrapped gifts stacked under a decorated tree? A glass of sherry, a mince pie and a carrot left on the fireplace for Santa and his reindeer? A Christmas dinner, with all the trimmings, shared with your nearest and dearest? Enough leftovers to keep the fridge stocked for days? Food is a big part of the festive celebration. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of the best apps to help with your Christmas cooking. All you need is a mobile phone and a stocked-up kitchen. We can’t help you with the latter, but we do have plenty of winter offers to help you save money on handsets and tariffs this festive season.

Yummly

Get: Apple / Android

A one stop shop for all your cooking needs, Yummly does it all. This app offers more than two million cooking guides, with different sections for different food categories. It also offers a calendar for planning and scheduling meals, cooking timers to help you while you’re making your food, and even the ability to add ingredients to a shopping list so you can make sure you’ve got everything you need before you start.

Cooking on a diet or allergic to certain food types? You can input this information to the app to customise your feed so that the recipes you see are tailored for you. There’s even a virtual pantry, where you can input your ingredients and the app will show you when your running low or your ingredients are approaching expiry.

There are step by step photos to help you along your way, and helpful video tutorials to make the process of cooking your meals even easier to follow. All of this comes in a clear and easy to navigate design.

Kitchen Stories – Recipes & Cooking

Get: Apple / Android

Kitchen Stories is not only one of the world’s most popular cooking apps, but it has also won awards for its design too. It offers you recipes and step-by-step cooking guidance, and it allows you to show off your own culinary talents and upload your own recipes to share with others. You can set up a personal profile to save your favourite recipes in personalised cookbooks, even upload photos of the dishes you’ve cooked to share and exchange experiences with others.

Browse by difficulty level or preparation time. Use the measurement converter to adjust a recipe to suit your intended serving size. Add recipes to your shopping list for an easy way to keep track of what you need – this feature integrates directly into your phone reminders to make your ‘to do’ list even easier to manage.

Mixology

Get: Apple

This isn’t, strictly speaking, a cooking app. But what’s a good meal without a good drink to accompany it? The Mixology app offers nearly 8,000 drink recipes to keep the party going this festive season. Use the liquor cabinet to list the liquors and mixers you have on hand and search for cocktails you have the ingredients for. Search by category, by rating, and save your favourites.

Want to take the role of cocktail creator to the next level? Learn bartending terminology and techniques. Feeling daring? Use the ‘Random Drinks’ generator, which uses a slot machine interface to suggest cocktail recipes based on liquor, mixer, and glassware. There’s even a liquor locator so that you can find liquor stores near you using your phone’s GPS.
