How To Clean Your Phone

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, there’s been an intense focus on the preventative measures we can take in efforts to ensure our continued health and safety. Washing hands regularly and carrying antibacterial hand gel has become a part of life, as has cleaning commonly used surfaces. One of the most commonly used items in the home is your mobile phone. A survey by dscout in 2019 found that the average person touches their mobile phone 2,617 times daily. So, it almost goes without saying that it’s important to keep your mobile phone clean.

Manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Nokia, and Sony have shared guidance on how to clean your mobile phone handset. It’s important to consult the manufacturer of your phone, carrying case, or accessory for any specific instructions they may have to avoid damage.

Instructions on how to clean your device may vary, but the process is relatively straightforward.

1. Unplug your device

Before you clean your mobile device, make sure its ports are completely free. Unplug your charger, your headphones, and any other accessories.

Your charger and accessories should be cleaned regularly too. Once again, it’s important to defer to guidance from the manufacturer on how to do this.

2. Remove your phone case

If your device has them, remove your protective screen cover and/or phone case. These too will need to be cleaned separately, and you should defer to the manufacturers guidance on how to clean different products or different materials.

3. Find the right cleaning products

This is where you want to defer to manufacturers guidance. Different phones may require different methods of cleaning. A quick google search should be able to give you the answers you need. The guidance given by Apple is that disinfectant wipes with up to 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol are safe to use without causing any harm to your iPhone. Alternatively, Apple advise using a soft lint-free cloth to clean the handset. They also advise that you don’t allow moisture to get into any openings, so keep your phone away from liquids and avoid spraying any cleaners directly onto your device. Once that’s done, leave your phone to air dry.

It’s important to keep your mobile phone clean, so once you’ve established the cleaning guidance as given by the manufacturer, it’s good to get into the habit of doing this on a regular basis. Of course, the best thing you can do to keep your phone clean is regularly wash your hands and wipe clean the surfaces you use on a frequent basis.
